Artist's Comments

This is the final project for my graphic design class: a movie poster that had to include use of Adobe Illustrator. Up to that point I hadn't truly practiced with Illustrator a lot, so I thought for the sake of learning, that I'd do the entire project in Illustrator. It was a struggle to say the least. =/

Although a lot of the tools and functions have a lot of crossover between Photoshop and Illustrator, it took me quite a while to figure out how to do certain tweaks and doodads. It took me an eternity to figure out how to get the perspective on the typography near the bottom correctly, where it would've taken me a spare moment to do the same in Photoshop. D: Frustrating stuffs.

Mine was also the only movie poster that was totally in grayscale and colorless when the class had the final presentations, so I felt kinda embarrassed. ^^; Plus I was late on printing it on the graphics printer, so I had to use a print out from my crummy printer for show and tell..

But aside that! I'm glad that I knew the pen tool when I did this project. It really made the whole cell shading deal very doable. Compared to the other projects, I suppose this one was the toughest because I felt restricted from using photo-manipulation. It's like I was mostly stuck cutting and pasting metaphorical pieces of solid colored paper over each other to make an image. So making really detailed or lush graphics seemed difficult to do at first. I really do appreciate how crisp the lines look in vector graphics though.

In case if anyone is asking, I'm pretty sure there is to be an actual SotC movie coming out in the next few years. My release date though is completely made up. I'm eager to see how that movie turns out. =)

Oh, and one last thing. I've looked at this image on other computers and I'm just curious, can you distinctively see the different areas of gray on the colossus? Or does it just blend in? It could've just been the crummy school monitor..

I see four distinct shades of gray on the colossus. P: This is awesome, Brandon. I don't remember seeing it in class, but you said it was a little late... xD I like how dramatic is, and how that's contrasted with the slight cartooniness of the "simple" graphic style. The text and shadow remind me of monty python for some reason. My favorite is the colossus. :) He's just standing there, but I still feel a lot of movement and dynamism.

Wow, thanks so much! =)
I like your comment about this being dramatic and cartoonish. It's neat what you can do with the pen tool, although it might be picky and tedious in Illustrator.
The text and shadow reminds you of Monty Python? I can't remember anything similar at the moment, but that's interesting. =] The text/shadow is a play on words, so maybe that's the reason.
Every time I look at this poster I'm reminded of this older animated film, "The Iron Giant"? Even though *that* giant was a bit more friendly compared to this one. XD
